maple forever!
this small wheel-thrown dish is made from light stoneware high-fire clay and features an imprinted japanese maple leaf at its center. the leaf was pressed into the clay, then the entire interior — leaf included — was brushed with a blue mason-stain porcelain slip. once the slip dried, the leaf was peeled away, revealing the pale clay beneath.
i love how the tips of the leaf reach up the walls of the dish, giving the whole form an easy sense of movement. finished in a clear glaze, the blue deepens beautifully and the leaf stands out crisp and soft all at once.
this piece works well as a ring dish, a tea bag rest, a place to set a watch at night, or a little catch-all for tiny essentials.
