this wheel-thrown mug is made of high-fire porcelain/stoneware mixed clay. the interior and exterior rim are glazed in a soft gray-blue, while the lower exterior shows off a gentle wavy texture created by brushed-on slip. this one was such a fun experiment: the entire lower half was coated in a salt wash, letting sodium bond with the silica and alumina in the clay to form its own natural glaze.
during the firing, the glaze also caught carbon in the kiln atmosphere, creating dramatic streaks of gray, smoky speckling, and those wild ribbons of orange. it’s full of movement and surprise on the outside — but the interior stays calm and quiet, a deep night-sky blue with tiny starry flecks.
and the handle includes a small thumb rest, offering a steady, comfortable landing spot for your grip. a softly flared base narrows into a low foot, giving the tumbler a grounded feel with a light profile.
