soda-lighting (pun, get it? it’s so delighting!)
this wheel-thrown mug is made of high-fire porcelain/stoneware mixed clay. the interior and exterior rim are glazed in bright white… though the soda firing transformed it so completely that only little hints peek through.
the whole mug was soda fired — a process where ash and baking soda (yes, really) are introduced during a gas reduction firing. when the vapors sweep across the surface, they leave behind glossy gray flashes and beautiful tawny/ruby-port drip lines. in areas where the soda and ash don’t land, the bare clay shines through in soft satin ochre, warm brown, and even a blush of pink, all shaped by the mug’s exact placement in the kiln. every surface is a little map of the firing.
this mug rests on a wide, easygoing base that tucks into a tiny foot — light on its toes but wonderfully steady while the handle includes a small thumb rest, adding a gentle, steady spot for your hand to settle.
