this wheel-thrown mug is made of dark red stoneware clay. the exterior of the mug features textured chattering that evokes the texture of bark on a tree and features satin white glazing both inside, on the top half exterior and behind the mug handle. aside from the texture, what catches the eye is how the glaze breaks thin on the handle, getting russet colored on the edges of the handle. the thinning coat of glaze on the exterior changes the coloring from a soft white into a toasty amber color and softens the texture about midway down the wall of the mug.
